Colourful Beaded Suncatcher: Project Instructions

Looking for an easy beading project with big visual impact? This DIY hanging sun catcher is a fun and creative way to use colourful glass beads — perfect for beginners and experienced jewellery makers alike. All you need is tigertail, a crimp or two, a selection of beads (our new bead soup mixes are ideal!), and a large focal bead or bell charm to finish it off.

Hang your sun catcher in a window, on the porch, or in a sunny spot where it can catch the light. It also makes a lovely handmade gift. Follow the step-by-step instructions below to create your own colourful beaded decoration.

MATERIALS REQUIRED

• tigertail wire (approx 50cm)
• 2 small crimp beads
• a mix of beads - our bead soup mixes are perfect!
• 1 large hole glass bead
• 1 bell or charm

TOOLS REQUIRED

• crimping pliers
• wire cutters

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

1. Make the Top Loop

Thread a crimp bead onto one end of your tigertail. Form a loop (around 3cm), pass the wire back through the crimp, and squash it flat. Trim any excess wire.

2. Add Your Beads

Thread on your chosen beads in any combination you like. You can lay them out first or go with the flow — either way, the results are always unique.

3. Add the Final Beads and Bell

Slide on the large-hole ridged glass bead, then a crimp.
Thread the wire through your bell or charm loop, then back through the crimp and the large bead.

Pull gently so everything sits snugly. You can either bead all the way up to the top loop, or leave a length of bare tigertail to make the piece longer — it’s completely up to you.

Squash the crimp flat and trim any extra wire. The large glass bead should slide over the crimp and finish it off nicely.
