39cm strand (approximately 48 beads) of manmade fordite round beads, each bead is approximately 8mm x 8mm, hole size is slightly larger than average (approximately 1.2mm).
Also known as Detroit agate or Motor City agate, fordite is itself a manmade "gemstone" (ie not a gemstone at all). It was created from finely layered acrylic paint, a byproduct of the automobile industry. It is said to have been first "discovered" at the Ford Motor Company in Michigan in the 1940s, and comes in a range of hues as tastes and fashions changed over the years. In recent years the process of painting cars has changed, resulting in less overspraying and therefore production of fordite.
These beads are not made from a material direct from the car manufactures but instead are an imitation, created from resins and dyes, intended to look similar to the original acrylic paint based product. The colour of these beads is similar to the classic traditional rainbow hues, with red and blue featuring prominently, as well as yellow and green. The beads have a slightly waxy lustre.
